How to Properly Take Care of Laptop Computers

Many of the following steps will prolong the life of your laptop. As tempting as it might be, always keep liquids away from your laptop computer. Accidents can happen all too easily, which result in spilled liquid damage to the internal components or cause electrical injury to the laptop.

LCD Screen
When you shut your laptop, make sure there are no small objects, such as a pencil or small ear-phones, on the keyboard, that can damage the LCD screen when closing your laptop. Close the lid gently while holding from the middle edge of the LCD screen. Closing the lid using only one side of the LCD screen creates more stress on an individual hinge, which can break over time.

Power Cord and AC Jack
The portability feature of laptops offers several distinct advantages. Care should be taken when the AC power cord is draped across the floor where someone can accidently trip and damage the internal AC jack. This can happen quite frequently, especially if one has pets at home. Take care to plug accessory devices into their proper slots with the correct orientation. For example, forcing a phone line into an Ethernet port or vice versa could damage the socket or the connector on the end of the cable.

Moisture from Condensation
If you bring your laptop indoors during winter months don't turn it on immediately, instead let it warm to room temperature first. This will avoid potential damage from condensation that can form inside the machine that could lead to a visit to a laptop repair shop.

Dust and Air Flow
Have the internal dust removed from your laptop at least once a year by your local computer repair shop. The system cannot cool itself efficiently when dust accumulates around the cooling fan. The amount of air flow is diminished whenever vents become obstructed and overheating can most certainly occur. Excessive heat can damage the motherboard and lead to a costly repair or the purchase of a new laptop. Also, keep objects from blocking the cooling vents whenever your laptop is powered up.

Tips
Choose your next laptop computer based on your requirements - for example, a sturdy case for or a light one for frequent travel.
Follow a preventive maintenance schedule to prevent problems from happening.
Keep a record of your laptop computer details, such as make, model and serial number.
Keep your laptop in an open area when in use for sufficient air circulation.
