How to tell if Your Laptop is Overheating

Laptop kept shutting down after being on for approximately 3 minutes

Does your laptop shut off on its own after running for a short period of time? Does the outside case feel warmer than normal when this occurs? Components which produce heat and are susceptible to performance loss and damage include integrated circuits such as CPUs, chipset and graphics cards. Overheated components fail early and may give sporadic problems resulting in system freezes or crashes.

Computer cooling is required to remove the waste heat produced by internal components and keep them within their safe operating temperature limits.

As a safety measure, many computers are designed to turn themselves off if the internal temperature exceeds a certain point. Alternatively, some have an option in their BIOS that allows the user to determine if the system emits an alarm beep or shuts itself down when the core temperature reaches the level set by the user. Caution: Setting this incorrectly can result in hardware damage or erratic system behavior.

Active Cooling
A computer fan is any fan inside, or attached to, a computer case used for cooling purposes, and may refer to fans that draw cooler air into the case from the outside, expel warm air from inside, or move air across a heatsink to cool a particular component. The use of fans to cool a computer is an example of active cooling. Check periodically to see if you can feel or hear the internal fan as it moves air through the exhaust ports. Overheating is sometimes due to clogged exhaust vents.

Goal of Active Cooling System
The goal of the cooling system is to keep the temperature of each component at a safe level. With regard to integral means, CPU and GPUs are designed with energy efficiency, including heat dissipation, in mind; though improved efficiency may only allow increased performance instead of reduced heat. If your laptop cooling fan is not working properly consult a trusted repair shop for a practical repair solution.
